The Weary Crown of Morning

The jarring, insistent shriek,
An alarm clock’s metallic cry,
Assaults the fragile morning’s peace,
A painful echo in the sky
Of my dark skull. I groan, a sound
Instantly swallowed by the deep,
Heavy silence all around,
I try to meld back into sleep.

A cruel hand pulls, a rhythmic beat,
From sleep’s warm, velvet, soft embrace,
It snatches me, with sudden heat,
And leaves my heart against my face.
My eyes fly open, dark and blank,
Staring up at the ceiling’s shade,
My body, safe within the bank
Of blankets, a fortress I have made.

But now the cold kiss starts to creep,
A sharp, unwelcome morning chill,
That pricks the skin I cannot keep
Beneath the covers, lying still.
With weariness, I fight the day,
The first act: pull the fabric high,
To hide, to make the light away,
And plunge into a private sky.

No. It can’t possibly be now,
Time is a thief that steals the night,
I want to vanish, somehow,
From all the expectations of the light.
Just lie here, a statue, breathing low,
Letting my mind drift, free and wide,
Back to the quiet dreams I know,
A ghost the sheets completely hide.

This is my refuge, warm and deep,
A sanctuary I’ll not leave,
While outside, light and noises sleep.
I am a vessel that will receive
A torrent of chaotic thought,
The doubt, the list, the sudden spark,
In this brief silence, dearly bought,
Before the world steps from the dark.

But then, the quiet starts to fade,
A deep, weary settling down:
Alas, the rising must be made.
Each day, a loop, a weary crown.
I run a race that has no end,
Against the clock, against demands,
A weight that bends, and still must bend.
I shove the covers with both hands.

The only prize, the only true
Reprieve, is time, unscheduled, pure:
To take a day, a week or two,
With only my children, to be sure.
No emails, bosses, or cruel stress,
Just me and my kids, simple, slow,
Wrapped in the light of quietness.
That is the only finish line I know.

Wait Your Turn

Wait Your Turn
They bid us work, and strive, and strain,
They preach the gospel of grit and pain.
The virtue of patience, a long-held breath,
Wait your turn, they assure, until death.
With diligent toil within the system’s fold,
Good things will come, a story often told.

They hail the high road of academic might,
Perfect grades, degrees, and the burning night
Of all-nighters, leading to institutions grand,
The path to success paved by a diploma in hand.
The central command, the mantra they impart:
Work hard, and success will fill your heart.

But the hollow sound their pronouncements make,
From a sheltered world, for goodnes’s sake.
A place sustained not by relentless effort’s cost,
But by the legacy that was never lost,
By exclusive gates and a lineage long,
A privilege entrenched, where they belong.

They fail to grasp the truth that grinds us down,
The doubled effort just to keep the crown
From slipping, just to stay where we began,
Disconnected from the struggle’s rigid plan,
That harsh existence which our lives define,
While they stand above, on heights divine.

What they possess, we desperately lack:
The insulating cushion on wealth’s track,
Money that shields them from survival’s fear.
They wield the power that holds the system dear,
Shaping the rules, not merely influence slight,
And connections unseen, a web of pure light.

A network of favors, a whispered invitation,
Opportunities passed through each generation,
A resource worth more than all the sweat we’ve spent,
Yet they command us to be more intent.
They stand on their platforms, elevated and cold,
“Work harder,” they shout, a story getting old.

This directive is a self-serving slight,
A useful tool for a blinding light,
To justify their perch, so high and so neat,
To placate the masses, a narrative complete.
Keep us focused on the effort of one,
Ignoring the structures, the battle unwon.

But now we pierce the veil, we understand,
Too long we’ve labored at their harsh command.
Our youth and our fire poured into the drain,
For a system of diminishing, aching pain.
We know by the certitude of what we live,
That harder work will not be enough to give.

It cannot breach the walls that they have raised,
It cannot lift the life we’ve always praised,
Nor close the chasm wide that separates
Their world of ease from the heavy fates.
The meritocracy’s promise, their comforting theme,
Is a fiction, a sermon, a vanishing dream.

It is a sham, a lie both vast and bold,
A hollow pretense, a story bought and sold.

The Day is Done

The Day is Done

The day unwinds, a weary sigh,
Muscles tense, a troubled eye.
But wait, a haven, warm and bright,
A steamy cloud, a cleansing light.

The faucet turns, a gentle hiss,
A symphony of water’s kiss.
On skin it falls, a soft embrace,
Washing worries from each face.

The steam ascends, a fragrant plume,
Lavender whispers in the room.
Scents of calm, a soothing balm,
Chasing stress in gentle squall.

Warmth seeps deep, a melting tide,
Melting tension, nowhere to hide.
Knots untangle, muscles sigh,
Replaced by peace, a gentle sigh.

Water dances, light and free,
Washing cares all down to sea.
A mental cleanse, a weightless dream,
In this warm haven, worries seem

To fade and blur, like distant rain,
Leaving only sweet refrain.
A moment stolen, just for me,
The simple joy of being free.

So step inside, and let it flow,
This cleansing dance, this gentle show.
The world can wait, its troubles cease,
For in this shower, there’s only peace.

Tick Tock

The clock ticks faster, a relentless drum,
Each beat a hammer on my weary head.
Responsibilities pile, a stifling hum,
Anxiety’s tendrils tighten, unsaid.

Thoughts race like squirrels in a frantic wheel,
Chasing deadlines, worries without end.
Sleep becomes a distant, foreign meal,
Muscles tense, a knot I cannot mend.

Breath shallow, rapid, a trapped bird’s song,
Chest constricts, a weight upon my soul.
The world seems harsh, a dissonant throng,
Each task a mountain, taking its toll.

But wait, a whisper in the storm’s loud roar,
A gentle breeze that bids the tension cease.
A pause, a breath, I close the frantic door,
And find within a moment’s fragile peace.

For stress may grip, but it does not define,
This too shall pass, like clouds across the sky.
With mindful steps, I’ll seek a calmer line,
And let the weight, for now, gently lie.

So breathe, dear heart, and find a moment’s grace,
This storm will break, and sunlight will return.
Remember, even in this stressful space,
There’s strength within, waiting to be born.

A Long Day at Work

Photo by Foodie Factor on Pexels.com

I wrote this son after a long day at work. Though my boss doesn’t yell at me, she is actually pretty awesome but most of us have had jobs like that.

A long day of work and I’m tired and stressed.
I need something to let me relax.
Boss is yelling and I’m slaving away.
Paycheck is coming it’s leaving so quick

One shot whiskey and I’m flying high
One shot and I can kiss my cares away
One shot it and I can sleep through the night
One shot keeps the demons away
One shot is all I need
One shot
One shot
One shot is all I need

I want to smoke Pot but my dealer says no
I want to smoke pot but my job says no
I want to smoke pot but my lungs say no

One shot whiskey and I’m flying high
One shot and I can kiss my cares away
One shot it and I can sleep through the night
One shot keeps the demons away
One shot is all I need
One shot
One shot
One shot is all I need

yes I would do pot but now I just do a shot
Job is stress life is too
Don’t want to go crazy so One shot is the

The taste of fire As it goes down so well.
Takes me to a place all my worries are gone
Taste of heaven as I’m flying.

One Day at a Time

One Day at a Time

The world spins round and round and round,
And I’m just trying to keep my feet on the ground.
But it’s hard, when all I feel is stress,
And I don’t know which way to turn next.

I’ve got bills to pay, and work to do,
And a family to take care of too.
But it’s all just too much,
And I don’t know how much longer I can take it.

I’m tired, and I’m stressed,
And I just want to scream.
But I know that won’t help anything,
So I just keep on going,
One day at a time.

I hope that one day,
Things will get better.
But until then,
I’ll just keep on trying to stay afloat.

I’m not sure how much longer I can keep this up,
But I’m going to do my best.
Because I know that I have to,
For my family, and for myself.

So I just keep on going,
One day at a time.

The Storm

photography of clouds during dusk
Photo by Ming SUN on Pexels.com
The wind pushed the sand into my face.
It stings as it hits like tiny bites across my flesh
I can barely see the endless mounds of sand in front of me.
I close my eyes, sheltering me from the ongoing storm.

Nothing is there to stop the storm.
I push one foot in front of the other.
One hand blocking my face,
And the other reaches out, hoping someone is there to pull me along.

The winds pick up, they swirl around me.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t move forward.
I kneel and cover my head with my hands,
In a desperate attempt to keep the sand off of my face.
I kneel there helpless and alone.

Then a hand rests on my shoulder.
Someone kneels down behind me,
and shelters me from the storm.

Intense

I might be abrasive
I might be passionate
I might love too much
I might say too much
I might ask too much
I might expect too much

Despite all of that you know I care.
Do not put me in a box
Tell me now to act
Tell me to be like you
I am not you.

So,
I might be abrasive
I might be passionate
I might love too much
I might say too much
I might ask too much
I might expect too much

It is Okay to Cry!

Don't cry!
Things might be overwhelming but you can handle them.
Don't cry!
Things might be loud but you can handle it.
Don't cry!
Things might seem out of control, but it will be okay.

It is okay to cry!
It does not mean you are weak.
It is okay to cry!
Things can be overwhelming, but you can handle them.
It is okay to cry!
